For over 25 years, Anthony Robbins has been a personal development guru shaping our behaviours and changing lives for the better. He’s currently a popular motivational speaker and success coach, having sold more than thirty-five million audio products and books. But can he do anything for you?

I’m generally quite skeptical when someone says that your way of thinking can make a difference in your success. You might be as well, and I wouldn’t be surprised, since there really are a lot of scams out there. However, there’s more to Anthony Robbins than we see at first glance.

I view Anthony Robbins completely differently now that I am familiar with his products and seminars. He really does deserve to be called a personal development guru. His famous walks over hot coals – barefoot! – show us how all of us can overcome our deepest fears to realize our dreams.

There is more to Tony Robbins than his towering 6’7″ frame. Even at forty-three, he can still inspire people and help them feel good enough to control their lives and achieve their dreams.

This expert in personal improvement states that our belief systems are our only true limitations. This means that our success is limited to our own belief in what we can do. The key to reaching your goals is to keep them fresh; telling yourself the same thing over and over again is a broken record and limits our ability to have faith in ourselves as individuals.

When it comes to questioning one’s own abilities, most people tend to think in a few basic patterns. Everyone has the same insecurities: about being accepted, about measuring up; about their ability to work hard enough. We can have full command over what we do if we learn the techniques to win over our apprehensions

Beliefs can impact us on all kinds of levels, especially the ones we’re not aware of, and they shape our actions. In other words, if we want a positive result, then we need to do something, and do something big. Without the determination or desire to move forward, nothing can assist us.

Following Tony Robbins’ program won’t yield instant results so you need to be patient. People who aren’t patient shouldn’t bother with this kind of program, since you need to be someone who’s willing to work to learn to attain your dreams. If you think you can handle it then it’s time to hear what Anthony Robbins has to say about personal development.

Tony Robbins is absolutely unique. He has been around in the personal development industry for more than 20 years. He has shared his message about positive attitude and reprogramming your mind with millions of people. He has served as a life coach for many influential people worldwide, including prominent business people, accomplished athletes, and even presidents. Additionally, he has published books and audios for self study that are available to anybody who wants to grow personally, expand their mind and realize their dreams. However, do the concepts that he offered back in ’86 still hold true?

Like millions of others around the world I bought his first book Unlimited Power in 1986 while I was in Los Angeles. I had been invited by a Kempo Club there, so I went and spent my days exercising and studying Martial Arts in general. I will never forget how I came across Tony Robbins´ Unlimited Power the very first time. I was in the book store looking for books on Martial Arts. My interests included titles such as Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War,” Gary Zukav’s “The Dancing Wu Li Masters – An Overview of the New Physics,” and anything by Carlos Castaneda.

The book store was literally full of Tony Robbins that time. Pictures and posters of him were put on all the desks along with his book. I thought to myself, wow, who is this guy? I picked this book up at the store, and kind of skimmed through it. For whatever reason, it didn’t really make sense to me then. Many years later, I really read it and grasped its concepts and applied the ideas. At that point, I wondered why I had ever waited this long to try this! I know that the answer is that I was not ready for it, but it seems so silly that the book just sat on my book shelf for a few years until I discovered Unlimited Power myself…

So many ideas that I was used to through the practice of Martial Arts were there: focus, strategy, energy, healthy eating, precision, judgment, challenge and a strong overriding message that it’s not about power over other people. It’s all about the control you have of your self.

The more I have read and listened to Tony Robbins, the more respect I have for him and everything he teaches. The primary emphasis of Unlimited Power is the ability to possess, accomplish and create whatever we desire. Nowadays, there are plenty of others who claim the same. This includes me. But in 1986, I believe Tony Robbins popularized the concept and spread it to the world much more widely than the pioneers before him. Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, for example, bares a striking resemblance to the teachings of Tony Robbins. Also, I see some similarities between Unlimited Power and the movie “The Secret”, which has certainly spread the concept of the law of attraction around the world.

A very central theme in Tony Robbins´ teachings is the importance of self-reliance and taking responsibility: “Whatever happens, take responsibility.” Do not blame others. Do not blame circumstances. Make your own good luck! Of course, these ideas are both universal and eternal too.

Achievers tend to believe that no matter what happens, whether it´s good or bad, they created it. If they didn’t cause it by their physical actions, maybe they did by the level and tenor of their thoughts. Now, I don´t know if this is true. Scientist have found no evidence supporting the idea that thoughts can create reality. But it´s a useful lie. This belief gives you control. That´s why I choose to believe in it. I believe that we generate our experiences in life – either by behaviour or by thought – and that we can learn from all of them. You will continue to play the victim of circumstance until you embrace the notion that you control your destiny, including the successes and failures therein. You must accept that things will happen to you regardless of your actions. You´re an object, not a subject. I can say with all certainty that if I held that belief, I’d leave immediately and seek out another culture, another world, and another planet. What is the reason for existence if you are merely a product of chance exerted externally?

Returning to the initial question, are the ideas that Tony Robbins presented to the world more than 20 years ago still applicable? I would say yes, definitely. Those concepts are universal and applicable anytime by anybody, because happiness and success in life are not the result of what we have, but rather of how we live. What we do with the things we have makes the biggest difference in the quality of life. Jim Rohn taught this to Tony Robbins many years ago. They’re 100% correct, and always have been; I know this now. In the words of Tony Robbins, “Live with Passion!”

Achieving your own happiness is the best measure of how well you are living your life and enjoying your relationships. You can learn how to be happier and more fulfilled in everything you do.

Everyone is Different
Happiness in life is like a smorgasbord. If 100 people went to a smorgasbord and each put food on their plate in the quantity and mix that each felt would be most pleasing to him, every plate would be different. Even a husband and wife would go up to the smorgasbord and come back with plates that looked completely different. Happiness is the same way. Each person requires a particular combination of those ingredients to feel the very best about himself or herself.

Listen to Your Heart
And your mix is changing continually. If you went to the same smorgasbord every day for a year, you probably would come back with a different plateful of food each time. Each day-sometimes each hour-only you can tell what it takes to make you happy. Therefore, the only way to judge whether a job, a relationship, an investment, or any decision, is right for you is to get in touch with your feelings and listen to your heart.

Be True to Yourself
You´re true to yourself only when you follow your inner light, when you listen to what Ralph Waldo Emerson called the “still, small voice within.’ You´re being the very best person you can be only when you have the courage and the fortitude to allow your definition of happiness, whatever it may be, to be the guiding light of every part of your life.

There Are No Limits
A very important point on the subject of happiness is whether or not you feel that you “deserve’ to be happy. Accept the notion that you deserve all the happiness you can honestly attain through the application of your talents and abilities. The more you like and respect yourself, the more deserving you will feel of the good things in life. And the more deserving you feel, the more likely you will attain and hold on to the happiness you are working toward.

Make Happiness Your Key Measure
You should make happiness the organizing principle of your life. Compare every possible action and decision you make against your standard of happiness to see whether that action would make you happier or unhappier. Soon, you will discover that almost all of the problems in your life come from choices that you have made – or are currently making – that do not contribute to your happiness.

Pay the Price
Of course, there are countless times when you will have to do little things that don´t make you happy along the way toward those larger things that make you very happy indeed. We call this paying the price of success in advance. You must pay your dues.
Sometimes these interim steps don´t make you happy directly, but the happiness you achieve from attaining your goal will be so great that it totally overwhelms the temporary inconveniences and dissatisfactions you have to endure in order to get there.

Action Exercises
Here are three steps you can take immediately to put these ideas into action.

First, accept that you deserve all the joy and happiness you can possibly achieve through your own efforts.

Second, make your own happiness the chief organizing principle of your life and judge everything against that standard.

Third, be willing to work hard and pay the price for the satisfaction and rewards you desire. Always go the extra mile and your success will be assured.

There are several different aspects of courage. Perhaps the most important is the courage to endure, to persist, to “hang in there’ in the face of doubt, uncertainty and criticism from others.

Practice Patience in Adversity
This is called “courageous patience,’ the willingness and the ability to “stay the course’ in the face of uncertainty, doubt and often criticism from many quarters.

Stay the Course
In my experience, there is a critical time period between the launching of a new venture and the results that come from that venture. During this hiatus, this waiting period, many people lose their nerve. They cannot stand the suspense of not knowing, of possible failure. They break and run in battle, they quake and quit in business.

The True Leader
But the true leader is the person who can stand firm, who refuses to consider the possibility of failure. The turning points of many key moments in human history have been the resolution, or lack thereof, of one person. Courageous patience is the acid test of leadership.

To encourage others, to instill confidence in them, to help them to perform at their best requires first of all that you lead by example.

Allow Honest Mistakes
The second thing you can do to help alleviate the fears of failure and rejection in others is to encourage them to take calculated risks and allow honest mistakes.

Build People Up
Give the people who look up to you regular praise and approval. Celebrate good tries as well as success, large and small. Create a psychological climate where people feel safe from censure, blame or criticism of any kind. Then do things that make people feel terrific about themselves.

Become Unstoppable
Courage comes from acting courageously on a day-to-day basis. Your personal development goal should be to practice the behaviors of a totally fearless person until you become, in your own mind, unstoppable.

Action Exercises
Here are two ways for you to develop courageous patience.

First, prepare yourself in advance for the inevitable disappointments and setbacks you will experience on the way to your goal. Don’t be surprised when they occur.

Second, resolve in advance that you will bounce rather than break and continually encourage others to think and act the same way.

Any change, or even an attempt to change anything you are doing, makes you uncomfortable. By attempting to change, you move out of your comfort zone. You feel increasingly uneasy. You experience stress and tension. If the change is too extreme, your physical and mental health can be affected. You will experience sleeplessness, indigestion, or fatigue. You may react with impatience, irritability or anger. You will often feel as if you are on an emotional roller-coaster.

Raise Your Internal Standards
So if you want to sell more and earn more, you must increase your self-concept level of income. You must increase the amount you believe yourself capable of earning. You must raise your aspirations, set higher goals, and make detailed plans to achieve them. You must begin to see yourself and think about yourself as capable of being one of the highest earning salespeople in your field. You must take charge of developing a new self-concept for sales and income that is more consistent with what you really want to accomplish.

Build Your Self-Concept Level of Income
Your self-concept determines your levels of performance and effectiveness in everything you do. In sales, you have a series of mini-self-concepts that govern every activity of selling. You have a self-concept for prospecting, for using the telephone, for cold calling, for making appointments, for qualifying, for presenting, for answering questions, for closing, for getting referrals, and for making follow-up sales. You have a self-concept of your level of product knowledge, your personal management skills, your level of motivation and for the way that you relate to different types of customers. In every case, you will always perform in a manner consistent with your self-concept.

The Key to Peak Performance
Wherever you have a high self-concept, you perform well. If you enjoy working on the telephone, you look forward eagerly to telephone prospecting and selling and you do it well. If you have a high self-concept for making presentations or for closing sales, you feel comfortable and competent whenever you are doing them.

Wherever you feel tense or uneasy in selling, it means that you have a low self-concept in that area. You do not feel comfortable when you are engaged in that activity. You probably avoid that activity as much as possible.

This is normal and natural. The only question is, “What are you going to do about it?’

Action Exercises
Here are two actions you can take immediately to get better results.

First, set a goal today to become one of the highest earning people in your organization. Then, back your goal with action by committing to becoming very good in every area of selling.

Second, see yourself, imagine and visualize yourself as if you are already very good at what you do. Create within yourself the feeling of success and accomplishment. Remember, as within, so without!
